From customer to seed production partner: Vinicio Yoj’s perspective on Semilla Nueva’s seeds

Vinicio Yoj is an agricultural supply distributor in Peten, Guatemala’s largest and northernmost department. Three years ago, while purchasing products for his business, he discovered Semilla Nueva’s biofortified seeds and decided to try them. “I planted them for two years for my family’s consumption and was very impressed by their yield and the quality of the grain,” he explains

This year, Vinicio and his company, AGROFER, joined four other Guatemalan seed producers to help nearly double the production of Semilla Nueva’s biofortified hybrids in 2024. “We originally agreed to plant about 10 acres of seed, but we have decided to more than triple that amount because of growing demand,” Vinicio says.

Vinicio has always sought ways to contribute to his community while building his business. “About a year-and-a-half ago, I met Rafael Tabic, Operations Manager at Semilla Nueva, and discussed the possibility of producing seeds for farmers in Peten, where I thought I could make a difference,” he recalls. Following this conversation, he agreed to produce and distribute Semilla Nueva’s hybrid seeds to agribusinesses throughout the region.

“Having planted these seeds myself, I knew they were a game-changer. The yields are impressive, the seeds are biofortified with essential nutrients, and they’re affordable. Plus, their resistance to drought and storms makes them even more valuable, especially in an area like Peten where extreme weather can make or break a harvest,” Vinicio notes.

Semilla Nueva’s biofortified hybrids are among Guatemala’s most affordable improved seeds, yet they compete with some of the most expensive varieties on the market in terms of yield and quality. This combination of high performance and affordability is what excites Vinicio the most. “Farmers aren’t just looking for new seeds; they’re looking for seeds that will increase their yield, improve their income, and ultimately feed their families better. That’s exactly what Semilla Nueva’s hybrids offer.”

What started as a personal decision to plant biofortified seeds for his own family has now blossomed into something much larger. “I’m proud to say that my company is helping bring these seeds to more farmers, not just for profit, but to make a real difference in our region,” Vinicio reflects.
